Private equity is the investment in companies, or more precisely, the provision of equity capital that is not traded on a regulated market. If it is a higher-risk investment, as is often the case with companies that are not yet established (so-called “start-ups”), it is referred to as venture capital. In this case the investment structure is often designed, right from the outset and as reflected in the core of the structuring, for several financing rounds. The challenge is to anticipate the future development of the target company and to be able to intervene with funds should the company not develop as desired. And of course, an exit is always mapped out so that the investors can realise their investment goals.
